The road network of Ithaca is in good condition and is, generally speaking, tarred. The exceptions are a few sections, sometimes small and sometimes larger, that lead to remote beaches. In these cases, one requires a 4×4 vehicle in order to reach them and experience their magic. For the smaller parts, you could leave your vehicle behind where the tar road ends, and continue by foot.

For those that have no car, there are agencies in Vathy that rent cars as well as motorbikes and bicycles. This gives you the opportunity to visit the whole island at your leisure and enjoy its beauties.  In addition, you can move-about using the KTEL bus system that links virtually all the villages of northern Ithaca. The starting point is in Vathy, very close to the central square of the town.

Taxis are available twenty-four hours and the drivers are always willing to give you a tour of the island. They await you in the ports of Piso Aetos and Frikes so as to take you to your destination. They are, after all, the only means of transport to and from the harbours for those that have no vehicle of their own. For this reason, and during the peak tourist season (July-August), it is advisable to have a taxi waiting for you at the harbour.

The traditional fishing boats or ‘caiques’, care for your needs with regard to sea excursions. You’ll have the opportunity to see unique scenery and swim in exquisite beaches that are approachable only by sea.  For those wishing to discover their own ‘private’ beach, we suggest the hiring of a vessel or boat. Don’t forget to visit the magical Gidaki beach using the boats from Vathy. A boat awaits you in Filiatro, ready to take you to any remote beach you may desire.
